#3 Have a signature dance move.

[dropcap size=small]I[/dropcap]f your skills are mediocre, you are going to need to compensate by attracting the crowd’s attention some other way.  An easy way to accomplish this is by having a unique dance move.  The crazier the better.

You’ll want to make sure that people are taking video of this move so that your reputation can benefit from it.  If done correctly, you’ll become well-known for your dancing rather than your skills behind the decks, but still get booked as a DJ.

#4 Grab a microphone, tell people what to do, and yell expletives.

[dropcap size=small]Y[/dropcap]ou’ll want to arrange with the sound guy before you start your set to have a microphone nearby.  Mixing music is never enough when you’re a DJ.  To really elevate your status, it’s best to act as your own MC.

We’ve studied superstar DJs closely to find the best times to do this during a set and here’s what we discovered – anytime is the best time.  So whether you’re approaching a drop or just reached a breakdown, feel free to grab that mic!  Now once you’ve got the microphone in your hand, it’s time to put it to good use.

Commanding the crowd to do things always works well.  Tell them to go crazy, raise their hands in the air, order a pizza, or anything you can dream up.  The sky is the limit, so get creative and give your crowd a night they’ll remember.  Oh, don’t forget to add a few f-words in your instructions to make sure people know who’s boss.

Pro Tip: Don’t drop the microphone if you are using it.
