Red Bull Music Academy Radio Flashback: DJ Rashad – Live at Cakeshop

Introduction to Flashback

In case you are new here, before we jump into this week’s mix, we want to explain what you can expect from this feature.  South Korea has been lucky enough to have some incredible artists perform thanks to Red Bull, and more specifically, the Red Bull Music Academy.  Several of these artists’ sets were recorded for the Red Bull Music Academy Radio and made available online.  We’ve partnered up with Red Bull to revisit these mixes to help promote both the artists and the idea of capturing music.  We are fortunate to be living in a time period that has the technology capable of recording audio and uploading it to a central location.  From that central location, we can listen to the audio from devices like computers, tablets, and smartphones.  In the past, if you missed out on a live performance, you would never get a second chance to hear it.  Nowadays, previous Red Bull Music Academy Radio performances from artists like DJ Rashad, are only one click away.

DJ Rashad – Live at Cakeshop

We’ve completed coverage of the live sets that were recorded at the 2013 World DJ Fest in Korea, so now it is time to change the focus.  For the next several weeks, we’ll be revisiting live sets that were recorded at Cakeshop.  If you aren’t familiar with Cakeshop, it is an intimate venue located in the heart of Itaewon.  They’ve continually host a ton of amazing DJs and live acts.  They are also an official Red Bull Music Academy partner, so they’ve had several events where the sets were recorded for Red Bull Music Academy Radio.  Up first is the Chicago juke pioneer, DJ Rashad.    Here’s what the Red Bull Music Academy Radio has to say about him:

Though simmering for years in the stew of Chicago’s nascent footwork and juke scene, the sound of Rashad’s frenetic 808 programming and deftly sliced r&b loops has turned into an epidemic in recent years, informing the trajectory of club music the world over. DJ Rashad’s skills behind the turntables, honed from years playing after-school footwork battles, provides the perfect soundtrack for adrenaline-fueled, 160 BPM dance mayhem.

We hope you enjoy this amazing set from DJ Rashad, and remember to check back every Thursday as we revisit more awesome sets from Red Bull Music Academy Radio in South Korea!  We’ve also posted a nice overview of the Red Bull Music Academy event series happening in Tokyo 2014, so check that out under the Red Bull Music Academy menu above or right here.
