Red Bull Music Academy Radio Flashback: Todd Terry – Live at World DJ Fest 2013

Introduction to Flashback

Before we jump into this week’s mix, we want to further explain what you can expect from this new feature.  South Korea has been lucky enough to have some incredible artists perform thanks to Red Bull, and more specifically, the Red Bull Music Academy.  Several of these artists’ sets were recorded for the Red Bull Music Academy Radio and made available online.  We’ve partnered up with Red Bull to revisit these mixes to help promote both the artists and the idea of capturing music.  We are fortunate to be living in a time period that has the technology capable of recording audio and uploading it to a central location.  From that central location, we can listen to the audio from devices like computers, tablets, and smartphones.  In the past, if you missed out on a live performance, you would never get a second chance to hear it.  Nowadays, previous Red Bull Music Academy Radio performances from artists like Todd Terry, are only one click away.

Todd Terry – Live at World DJ Fest 2013

During the 2013 World DJ Fest in Yangpyeong, South Korea, the Red Bull Music Academy Festival Stage hosted some incredible acts. For the first few weeks of our Flashback feature, we’ll be checking out some of the recorded live sets from Red Bull Music Academy Radio. For the third edition of this feature, we have Todd Terry‘s set from the festival.  Todd Terry is a Grammy Award nominated music producer and DJ from Brooklyn, but gained a lot of popularity in England and Europe as far back as the late 80s.  He’s a veteran in the game, so those in attendance for his set last year were very lucky.  Here’s what the Red Bull Music Academy Radio has to say about him:

Todd Terry is one of the quintessential NYC dance music producers – for more than 25 years. Born in Brooklyn, Todd Terry is as much New York as it gets. Blessed with the instinct, aesthetic and freedom that comes with hip hop, he created a unique brand of house music. Heavy on the sample tip and always aimed directly at the dancefloor, his earliest records like Bango, A Day In The Life or Can You Party set the parameters for his musical universe. Graced with an unmistakable sound signature, the house sound of Todd Terry is one of the essential reference points of this music – you just know a Todd Terry beat when you hear it. Citing classic disco, rock or funk records throughout his works, Terry’s tracks were as much in favour with US-American DJ heavyweights like Tony Humphries as they were with the hyped-up club music crowds on the UK island. Todd Terry’s effectiveness spread further through his several aliases like Gypsymen or CLS, and records like Jungle Brothers’ seminal I’ll House You, his classic chart-topping remix for Everything But The Girl’s Missing, and his very own version of Keep On Jumpin’. His labels TNT and Freeze released a nitty-gritty range from vocal house to hip hop instrumentals and disco cut-ups, as well as his infamous Unreleased Projects.

We hope you enjoy this amazing set from Todd Terry and remember to check back every Thursday as we revisit more awesome sets from Red Bull Music Academy Radio in South Korea!  We’ll also be posting a great feature on the actual academy for this year’s Red Bull Music Academy in Tokyo, so check that out when it drops.
