Red Bull Music Academy Radio Flashback: Akimbo – Live at Cakeshop
Introduction to Flashback
In case you are new here, before we jump into this week’s mix, we want to explain what you can expect from this feature. South Korea has been lucky enough to have some incredible artists perform thanks to Red Bull, and more specifically, the Red Bull Music Academy. Several of these artists’ sets were recorded for the Red Bull Music Academy Radio and made available online. We’ve partnered up with Red Bull to revisit these mixes to help promote both the artists and the idea of capturing music. We are fortunate to be living in a time period that has the technology capable of recording audio and uploading it to a central location. From that central location, we can listen to the audio from devices like computers, tablets, and smartphones. In the past, if you missed out on a live performance, you would never get a second chance to hear it. Nowadays, previous Red Bull Music Academy Radio performances from artists like Akimbo, are only one click away.
Akimbo – Live at Cakeshop
This week we are continuing our flashbacks to live sets that were recorded at Korea’s Cakeshop venue. If you aren’t familiar with Cakeshop, it is an intimate venue located in the heart of Itaewon. They’ve continually host a ton of amazing DJs and live acts. They are also an official Red Bull Music Academy partner, so they’ve had several events where the sets were recorded for Red Bull Music Academy Radio. The final set we are featuring from Cakeshop is from a DJ that you can catch regularly playing around Korea – Akimbo. Here’s what the Red Bull Music Academy Radio has to say about him:
Akimbo is the tropical-ised and boogified alter ego of Madrid Academy alumnus Rhylon Durham. Despite being operative only a short time, he has amassed a stack of seismic neon bass tunes, peppered with afro-cuban cross rhythms and bouncing claves. Like a splash of cold coconut milk in your face on a hot summers day, Akimbo throws down a refreshing sound that is rooted firmly in ancient rituals and forward-looking club sonics. From reworks of Dumi and The Minanzi Marimba Ensemble, to Ginger Johnson and Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Akimbo’s embrace takes all styles of folk music from around the world and twists it into strange new shapes.
We hope you enjoy this amazing set from Akimbo, and remember to check back every week as we revisit more awesome sets from Red Bull Music Academy Radio in South Korea! We’ve also posted a nice overview of the Red Bull Music Academy event series happening in Tokyo 2014, so check that out under the Red Bull Music Academy menu above or right here.
